Associate Professor Saad Mahmoud Ali, Head of the Biomechanical Engineering Department at the Technological University,

participated in the Seventeenth International Cultural Certificate Festival/ Exhibition of Patents, organized by the General Secretariat of the Holy Hussein Shrine from February 14th to 18th, 2024.

Under the theme "Imam Hussein, peace be upon him... A call to freedom and the secret of victory,"

the event showcased a patent titled:

"Design of a Flexible and Advanced Low-Cost Nanoscale Artificial Heart for Permanent Use"

The patent focused on the design, modeling, analysis, and development of a new generation of artificial hearts produced using three-dimensional printing technology and a variety of medical and nanomaterials. It resulted in the creation of a flexible, low-cost artificial heart, easy to operate, with a size comparable to a natural heart for all ages, low energy consumption, and high durability and reliability for permanent heart replacement, unlike current artificial hearts that operate for a limited period.

The patent garnered interest from experts, officials, and guests from various countries. Media outlets focused on it, and several television interviews were conducted to highlight the vision and goals of the Biomedical Engineering Department and the potential application of the patent for community service.

 

Branch of Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation in the Biomedical Engineering Department

A workshop titled "Duties of Quality Assurance Coordinators for the Bologna Process" was held

under the patronage of Dr. Wissam Kazem Hamdan, the esteemed Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, and in the presence of the department's faculty.

The Branch of Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Technological University organized a workshop on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Ali Jalal Ali and Assistant Professor Diyar Jalal Naji.

The workshop targeted the faculty of the first stage and covered the most important instructions and regulations for both faculty and students outlined in the Bologna Process guide. It also clarified the working mechanism for students and faculty within the Bologna Process. Additionally, the workshop focused on explaining the academic system, including the unit system, academic load, and the curriculum guide for the Biomedical Engineering Department.

 

Under the sponsorship of Professor Dr. Wisam Kazem Hamdan, Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, and under the supervision of the Scientific Assistant, Professor Dr. Janan Star Khushan, along with the participation of the members of the Bologna Path Committee in the department in cooperation with the Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Division represented by the department's head, Dr. Ali Jalal Ali, and Ms. Diar Jalal Naji responsible for the quality of the Bologna Path.

The committee completed its work for the first semester of the first stage for the academic year 2023-2024, which included implementing the requirements of the Bologna Path Quality Guide provided by the ministry, including:

1- Preparation of a questionnaire for first-stage students about the system.
2- Review of the course description for first-stage lecturers.
3- Reports from the Bologna Path Quality Committee on the progress of the process during the course and implementation of all path requirements.
4- Conducting workshops on the Bologna Path.

Furthermore, the department head expressed his gratitude to the efforts exerted by the committee members to complete all the requirements and necessary procedures for implementing the Bologna Path.

 

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Technology achieved second place among engineering departments in the Iraqi University Ranking for the year 2023.

After our university ranked third in the overall ranking of universities in the Iraqi University Ranking for the year 2023, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the results of the Iraqi ranking of scientific departments in universities. This is in line with its policy to enhance responsiveness to quality requirements, develop the educational environment, and measure institutional performance indicators. The results of this edition, completed by the Supervision and Scientific Evaluation Department, include the evaluation of (1875) scientific departments in (95) government and private universities and colleges according to program accreditation criteria by 40%, faculty members by 25%, students by 20%, and international rankings of academic specialties.

In conclusion, we congratulate this achievement, hoping for more success for our department and our university in serving our beloved Iraq.
