Professor Dr. Wisam Kazim Al-Saraji, the Department of Biomedical Engineering held

a workshop titled "Deviation: Ethical Corruption and Behavioral Deviation, Not Personal Freedom"

on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM in Al-Quds Hall.

The workshop was presented by Dr. Ali Fadel, as part of the ministry's plan and approach to address erroneous and deviant behavioral cases in Iraqi society. The workshop shed light on deviation, one of the latest topics that arouse people's interest from various backgrounds (religious, intellectual, and social) due to its prevalence in Arab societies and the region's countries. It highlighted how proponents of this deviant phenomenon have shifted from a defensive stage to an offensive one, challenging laws and statutes that prohibit and criminalize such actions, exploiting the support provided by the United Nations and some countries claiming to defend freedoms and human rights.

Negative social impacts on society by deviants were discussed, and Dr. Ali Fadel presented a set of recommendations and points to combat and prevent the spread of this negative phenomenon. Among the most important recommendations were the enactment of deterrent laws that criminalize these acts, the establishment of specific and binding conditions in all governmental institutions and ministries to tighten control over affiliates who engage in or promote such acts, imposing the harshest penalties on offenders akin to drug crimes. Furthermore, specific regulations were suggested for applicants seeking employment or education in higher education institutions and other ministries, ensuring their suitability through health institutions. Additionally, combating this phenomenon was emphasized through scientific, social, cultural, and religious elites to expose and deter these deviant behaviors.

workshop entitled "The Educational and Ethical Role in Combating Intellectual Extremism and Religious Deviation"

Written by

As part of the plan of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to conduct educational courses, seminars, and workshops in the educational community to address negative and deviant phenomena,

the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Technology organized a workshop entitled

"The Educational and Ethical Role in Combating Intellectual Extremism and Religious Deviation"

on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 10:00 AM in the Al-Quds Hall.

The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Fadel Buaioi and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Nasser.

The workshop addressed how education plays a significant and effective role in prevention and combating intellectual extremism, religious deviation, and terrorism, which has become a growing international trend in recent years.

Additionally, the workshop clarified the concept of intellectual extremism and how it transforms into violence and terrorism, threatening society. Universities play a crucial role in confronting violent extremism and terrorism by contributing to activities and events aimed at eliminating violence and extremism. It emphasized the importance of implementing training programs to develop the capabilities of teaching staff in higher education institutions to combat erroneous phenomena and promote values of tolerance and constructive communication through their curricula and activities.

Building students' intellectual resilience against extremism and terrorism is achieved through formulating an educational discourse aimed at building and developing students' intellectual security, enhancing citizenship values, national and cultural identity, and teaching true citizenship with the aim of participating in sustainable peace and contributing to the development of society and humanity as a whole. The growth of social and ethical responsibility in any society enhances government efforts to confront extremism and terrorism because it signifies a high level of awareness among its individuals and institutions about the seriousness of this phenomenon and the necessity of confronting it through a comprehensive and integrated strategy.

At the end of the workshop, Dr. Ali Fadel presented a set of recommendations and proposals, the most important of which is the establishment of an international strategic center to combat extremism, headquartered in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, or any institution with similar goals. It also aims to establish units to combat extremism in every college or university concerned with guidance, monitoring, and countering intellectual extremism in all its forms.
